“Good to receive thoughts and guidance in what can be a very complicated process.”
Mike Radlett, Carville Switchgear, Burgess Hill
Breakfast Event Presentations – Biomass Boilers & Carbon Management, Lewes
Renewable energy specialist, Jonny Starmer of Baystar Energy gave an overview of biomass boiler technology, including different fuel storage and delivery options. He explained how the Renewable Heat Incentive has greatly improved the return on investment from installing a biomass boiler, especially at premises off the gas grid.
Mike Chapman of South East Wood Fuels, provided an insight into the wood fuel industry, from tree planting to chipping and pellet manufacture. He explained how generally it is a very low carbon process, with relatively little machinery or transportation required (especially as the South East is England’s most woody region) and that the management of often neglected woodland helps boost biodiversity.
Abigail Dombey, Environmental Manager at the University of Brighton, explained why they have committed to achieving a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2020; to reduce resource consumption and costs, comply with legislation and demonstrate they are a forward-thinking, responsible organisation.
The university have installed a number of environmental technologies including solar PV, rainwater harvesting, green roofs and an aquifer thermal energy storage system, which acts like a giant ground-source heat pump, as well as implemented an award-winning staff and student engagement campaign called C-Change.
The Sustainable Business Network is delivering the events programme of the Green Growth Platform, a 5 year programme led by the University of Brighton offering a range of free and subsidised services to both businesses in the environmental sector and those looking to improve their environmental performance.
In February and March free behind-the-scenes tours of Newhaven Energy-from-Waste Plant and Peacehaven Wastewater Works are being held for local businesses. Bookings can be made on-line.
