Industry Insight Tours – Hollingdean MRF

Our newest series of events ‘Industry Insight Tours’, held in partnership with the Green Growth Platform continued this month with two visits to Veolia’s Materials Recovery Facility at Hollingdean.

IMG_2598 (2)Our host Peter Cox, Manager at Hollingdean MRF took us on a guided tour of the site and showed us the different areas where over 120,000 tonnes of household waste and 60,000 tonnes of mixed recycling from East Sussex and Brighton & Hove is collected, and sorted into different materials ready to be bulked and transported onwards to recycling, recovery and disposal facilities.

Veolia is keen to educate people on the importance of recycling and has strong links with local schools, encouraging children to attend the site and see what happens to household waste first hand.

Charlotte Smith from Cityzen LLP said “It was quite sobering to see the amount and mix of waste today, I can see there are opportunities for changing my personal behaviour even more.”
