“The workshop has certainly opened my eyes into the hidden costs with regards to our utilities.”

Utilise Plus Case Study: Spellman High Voltage Electronics
In Spring 2018, Spellman High Voltage Electronics was awarded a Utilise Plus grant of £3,500 for their LED lighting project. The Utilise Plus programme is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and offers grant funding and business support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The programme helps these organisations to reduce their energy usage, saving them money year after year.
Based in Pulborough, West Sussex, Spellman High Voltage Electronics is an independent supplier of precision DC high-voltage power supplies for a number of different industries, ranging from medical care and scientific research to telecommunications and security. They had already upgraded their inefficient fluorescent tubes to energy-saving LEDs in some parts of their site and made use of a Utilise Plus grant to ensure this best practice could be extended throughout their organisation. In addition to this, they installed motion and daylight sensors to maximise their energy and cost savings.
This will reduce Spellman’s annual electricity usage by around 45%, saving them nearly £2,100 each year and reducing their greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e) by over 5 tonnes! That’s the equivalent to driving 11,000 miles- the distance from Inverness to London and back!
The project was led by Spellman’s Quality and Environmental Coordinator, Richard Howlett. Richard said that they “are always looking for opportunities to reduce energy costs and improve efficiency so LED lighting seemed an obvious solution and the Utilise Plus energy efficiency grant made this quickly achievable….The application process was straight forward and fully supported by the Sustainable Business Partnership CIC right through to the final payment of the grant.”
Spellman High Voltage Electronics is another great example of the benefits of Utilise Plus grant funding to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). By reducing their environmental impact, they will now be saving money – it’s win-win for everyone!
