Specialist Seminars – Raising Green Investment

The series of specialist seminars run by the Sustainable Business Network as part of the Green Growth Platform’s events programme continued on Friday 11th September with Raising Green Investment in Chichester.

Raising Green Investment 11-09-2015The session was led by hear Craig Copeland, director of Carbon Minded, who explained different options for raising investment for both large scale projects and for developing new environmental and low-carbon products and services. Methods of financing discussed included traditional equity funding, loan funding, and different types of crowdfunding.

Out of these, most time was allocated to crowdfunding, as an exciting new alternative to traditional funding models. Craig demonstrated how to pitch your business on websites such as Seedrs.com, an equity-based crowdfunding platform and FundingCircle.com, a loan-based crowdfunding platform.

He also introduced Indiegogo.com and Kickstarter.com, especially relevant for promising start-ups with a strong social mission, as instead of requiring you to pay anything back or give away chunks of your business, people invest because they believe in the social purpose of your business idea.

Craig, who has had extensive experience raising large sums of money for such as renewable energy schemes, also spoke about preparing for due diligence (after an interactive group activity) and tax-incentives such as the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme. The session ended with a Q&A where he gave case-specific advice to the delegates, who were setting up diverse businesses, including several social enterprises.

Specialist Seminars continue on the 30th September in Brighton with a Tendering Masterclass.
