Best Practice Case Studies from the Gatwick Diamond

Crawley Borough Council sponsored the 2014 Gatwick Diamond Green Business of the Year Award, and were delighted to report a high standard of applications from both businesses improving the resource efficiency of their own premises and those offering environmentally friendly products and services.

It has installed loft and cavity wall insulation in over 1,000 homes, spray taps and low-flow shower heads in 600 properties and solar PV on a number of buildings. The trust also recognises the tenant’s key role in energy management and runs a very successful, active support programme.

University-of-Brighton-Green-RoofThe University of Brighton, who won the award, have focused on improving the efficiency of their campus and engaging its users. 132 solar PV panels have been installed on the Cockcroft Building, reducing CO2 emissions by 18 tonnes, and despite a £107,000 price tag, a new data centre at the Watts Building is expected to pay for itself in energy savings in just 1.5 years. In both buildings rainwater harvesting has been installed to provide water to flush the toilets.

c-change, the university’s creative engagement programme, has also been a great success, with over 5,158 staff and students getting involved.

Southern Railway has installed a range of measures across its network. Voltage optimisation at their Brighton depot reduced energy use by 7%, 42 solar PV panels at Croydon Station power CCTV and lighting systems and rainwater harvesting in Uckfield provides water to flush the station toilets.  The company have an excellent programme involving staff with environmental issues, developing their skills and knowledge and embedding these within the organisation. It is currently targeting biodiversity improvements.
