“Because we have been working on environmental issues for some time I was surprised at how much useful practical information was new to me which I can now apply within my organization.”

Utilise Plus Case Study: Whitgift Sports Club
Whitgift Sports Club, based in South Croydon, received a £5,000 Utilise Plus grant in December 2018 for their heating and hot water project. The Utilise Plus programme is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and helps small and medium sized enterprises to reduce their costs and environmental impact by saving energy.
Whitgift offers a wide range of sporting activities for the local community, from football and rugby to tennis and cricket. It’s essential for them to provide their members with sufficient heating and hot water so when they discovered that their boiler was only working at 55% efficiency, they knew they needed to take action.
Their old, conventional gas-fired boiler was replaced with a 35kW high-efficiency condensing boiler with temperature controls, while their old calorifiers were replaced with a continuous flow water heater.
This installation not only increases the comfort of Whitgift’s staff and members, but also saves them energy and money! Their annual electricity and gas usage has been reduced by around 63%, saving them just over £5,200 each year and reducing their annual Greenhouse Gas emissions (CO2e) by around 23 tonnes!
Whitgift Sports Club is another fantastic example of how being more sustainable is both good for business and good for the environment.
