Case Studies

This is really well put together, I am delighted with the end result.

East Sussex Office Energy Savings

In small commercial premises, heating and lighting can often be responsible for 90% of energy costs. Two businesses in East Sussex have looked to reduce consumption.

Cavity Wall & Roof Insulation

Cavity-WallHaving upgraded their boiler to an A-rated condensing version, Armstrong Young explored other energy saving opportunities at their Crowborough premises. With the help of a £1,000 grant from the Energy Efficient East Sussex programme, they installed cavity wall and roof insulation.

As Director Chris Young explained, “In a single storey building with a large external wall area, heat seemed to instantly escape! As well as reduce our gas bills by around £250 each year, the insulation has helped create a more comfortable working environment.”

The work cost £1,205 and so will pay for itself in less than five years.

Similar savings have also been achieved through the replacement of 36 halogen spotlights with LEDs. The new lights use 6.4 Watts electricity, just over 10% of the 50 Watts used by the originals.

LED Lighting, Boiler to Follow

Engineering consultants EAR Sheppard also installed new lighting, replacing 46 T8 fluorescent tubes in twin fittings with LED equivalents. This has reduced annual electricity usage and costs by 3,000 kWh and £300.

Tear-sheppard-lightinghe Eastbourne based company received a £1,000 grant towards the project, which in line with most fluorescent to LED upgrades, has a payback period of around 4.5 years.

Winter approaching, they then replaced their increasingly temperamental boiler. As Director Leisa Sheppard explained installing a modern replacement was the best option.

“The choice was regular £500 repair costs or £2,500 to fit a more reliable and energy efficient model. Along with improved timer controls, which were a recommendation of our Energy Audit, the new boiler should reduce our bills by around £250 per year”.

The previous boiler was 78% efficient when first installed and only had a 24-hour time control meaning that it had to be manually switched off before the weekend, a task easily forgotten. The new boiler is 90% efficient and has a 7-day time will ensure the heating does not switch on on Saturday or Sunday.

Energy Efficient East Sussex helped SMEs reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 150 tonnes. It was funded by East Sussex County Council and delivered by the Sustainable Business Partnership CIC.
