Utilise Plus Case Study: Funplex

In January 2018, Funplex was awarded a Utilise Plus grant of just over £1,000 for their LED lighting project. The Utilise Plus programme is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and offers grant funding and business support to organisations to reduce their energy use, saving them money year after year.

Funplex – a children’s indoor play centre in Brighton – upgraded their inefficient fluorescent tubes and 400W metal halide lamps throughout the premises to energy-saving LEDs. Motion sensors were installed in less frequently used areas to maximise these energy and cost savings.

This will reduce Funplex’s annual electricity usage by 10%, saving them over £1,000 each year and reducing their greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e) by over 4 tonnes!

The project was led by Funplex’s Director, Mike Warne, with the objectives of reducing his organisation’s carbon footprint and energy costs, as well as to avoid the maintenance costs incurred by low-efficiency lamps. Mike commented that “all businesses should be cost aware and energy costs make up a significant part of this.” He added that “the grant funding process was easy to navigate through with support and guidance from the Sustainable Business Partnership CIC.”

This is a great example of how Utilise Plus grant funding is benefitting small and medium sized enterprises in reducing their environmental impact and saving them money in the process. As Mike said, “everyone is a winner!”
